  5. Nationalist communist leader Ho Chi Minh
  6. proclaimed an independent Vietnamese
  7. republic, which soon began an armed struggle
  8. against French forces. France in turn set up
  9. a Noncommunist state four years later. In
  10. 1954, after the siege of Dien Bien Phu, a
  11. ceasefire was agreed between France and China
  12. that resulted in the establishment of two
  13. separate Vietnamese states, North and South
  14. Vietnam, divided by the 17th parallel.
